"From Games to Games", an invitation to understanding

Bruce Hayes is the proud owner of gold medals from both the Olympics and the Gay Games (here at Gay Games VIII, Cologne)

The Federation of Gay Games has a long and lively relationship with the Olympic movement. For several years we have been investigating ways to bring together elite athletes, coaches and sports support staff with LGBT sports and sport events.

We are pleased to announce a very simple plan to invite Olympians to the Gay Games.

Objectives

  • To promote the Gay Games and the LGBT sport movement
  • To inform elite LGBT Olympians of the existence of LGBT sport and to transmit the message that they are welcome participants
  • To bring elite Olympians, gay and straight, to the Gay Games so that they become intermediaries between mainstream sport and LGBT sport
  • To build relationships between future leaders of mainstream sport and the LGBT sport movement

Eligibility
Olympians (athletes, coaches and support staff) participating in the 2012 and 2014 Olympics are eligible. There is no need to have won a medal or achieved a minimum level of performance: participating in the Olympics is the only criterion.

Benefits
Participating Olympians receive a fee waiver for Gay Games 9 (as funding permits), and if funding is available, further assistance may be provided. The program will be administered by the FGG Scholarship Committee in conjunction with our hosts at Gay Games 9, Cleveland+Akron 2014.

I’m an Olympian: do I have to be gay or lesbian to participate?
No, the program is open to all. The FGG and the Gay Games do not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation.

I’m an Olympian: is it fair for me to compete in the Gay Games?
The Gay Games offer competition at a variety of levels. Most participants would be delighted to compete against an Olympian, but if you so desire (or if your sport isn’t offered), you can compete in another sport among the more than 30 Olympic and non-Olympic sports on offer in Cleveland+Akron.

I’m an Olympian: how do I apply?
Please write to gamestogames@gaygames.org and you’ll be informed of the registration process when it opens.

How can I help?
We are seeking donations from individuals, corporations, and foundations to make this program possible. If you would like to “adopt an Olympian”, please donate. And while you’re at it, please don’t forget our appeal for needs-based scholarship donations for participants from lesser-developed countries.
